The conference is convened within the context of a new programme of work associated with the UNESCO-UNU Chair in Regional Integration, Migration and the Free Movement of People jointly located at UNU-CRIS and the Department of Political Science, University of Pretoria (South Africa) and takes place in Pretoria on 19 and 20 April 2012.

“The new UNESCO-UNU Chair aims through research, policy analysis and policy networking to help formulate and advocate policies that facilitate the free movement of people across borders. Its main focus for research and policy advocacy is the role of regional associations of governments in facilitating free movement both within and between regions. A particular emphasis of its work is to try to ensure that free movement should take place in conditions which enable those moving to access equitably entitlements to residence, work, social protection, health, education and other social services. An initial focus of the Chair is the furtherance of these objectives in Southern Africa”.

The conference will bring together scholars, policy makers and advocates at the intersection of the fields of regional governance, migration studies and social policy in order to advance both understanding and policy formation especially within the African context. The conference is situated in one of the research programmes of the Chair; Regional Integration, Migration and Social policy project (RIMIS) which focuses among other things the social entitlement conditions under which migration and free movement takes place within (and between) regions. The welfare entitlements of free movers and migrants provided for by regional policy will be mapped and compared across regions.
