Article: The Bush's Administration Legacy in Africa

By: Rodrigo Tavares

in Relações Internacionais, September 2008

The main purpose of this article is to produce an assessment of Bush’s legacy in Africa using both American and African sources. The article comprehends three main sections. Firstly, it argues that in order to be correctly understand George W. Bush's administration policies in Africa they should be compared to the legacy of his predecessors – namely Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Secondly, it highlights how American strategy has concentrated on four pillars: military cooperation, official development assistance, the fight against diseases such as HIVAIDS and malaria, the protection of democracy and good governance. In the last part we try to anticipate the policies on Africa of the presidential candidates John McCain or Barack Obama.
